MAFFL Rules

Official Rulebook

Rule changes may be suggested prior to draft night when they will be voted on and all rules will be finalized. The rules and scoring shown below are believed to be an accurate representation of the same as indicated by the Yahoo! software. The Yahoo! software supercedes any misrepresentations as shown below so all owners are urged to review the Yahoo! scoring and rules carefully.

Rule #1 - Number of Franchises and divisions. The Major Armchair Fantasy Football LeagueTM, hereafter referred to as MAFFL, shall consist of up to 12 franchises. The MAFFL shall consist of 1 division.

Rule #2 - MAFFL Software. The intent of using software for managing the MAFFL shall be to limit the amount of time expended by league officers and facilitate communication/participation from league owners. The official tool for managing the MAFFL is found at  Yahoo! Fantasy Football. All Yahoo! standard rules are used. A Yahoo! Private League is used (search MAFFL 2014). Customized scoring is used as defined under Rule 7.

Rule #3 - MAFFL Officers. The supreme ultimate ruling authority of the MAFFL shall be the Commissioner. Losers of the previous MAFFL season Fantasy Bowl must act as commissioner the following season, unless this turns out to be Rob (Boob Kings) as was the case with the 2006 season prompting Bob (ECS/CFL) to stage a coup and once again usurp commisionership for 2007. Trades and Free Agent aquisitions are completed by using the official software. Weekly starting lineups must be completed with the software or by notifying the commissioner  (see rule 6A). Any and all disputes will be decided by the Commissioner, whose rulings are binding and final. So there.

Rule #4 - MAFFL Software, Draft Day and Franchise Fees. All franchise owners shall bring $125.00 to the annual draft to pay to the commissioner for the franchise fee. The distribution of the franchise fee is described in rule #11. Expansion franchises, if any, will be required to bring a case of beer to the annual draft. Franchise owners must submit the franchise team name and the name of the team owner(s) to the Commissioner at this time. The annual draft will be held on or around the Tuesday or Wednesday following Labor Day via online Yahoo Draft, usually @ 7:00 p.m. sharp.

Rule #5 - MAFFL Draft. The draft shall last 16 rounds. The selecting order shall be randomly determined and the order shall be reversed for the even-numbered rounds. Each franchise owner shall select players from the following categories: quarterbacks (2), running backs (4), wide receivers (4), tight ends (2), kickers (2) and defense/special teams (2). Each franchise owner will be given one minute to make each draft pick for the 1st through 10th rounds, and two minutes per draft pick for the 11th through 16th rounds.

Rule #5A. Players who are listed at more than one position may be drafted only as a one position player. For instance, should any team list Kordell Stewart as a QB/WR, Kordell Stewart may be drafted as either a quarterback or a wide receiver. The position of the player is determined by the league software and remains in effect for the entire season.

Rule #5B. Trading of draft positions between franchises. The draft order will be determined by random drawing held 1 week before the draft. Once the draft positions have been determined, the owners are free to trade draft positions between franchises. Trades involving draft positions must be done evenly between the teams, so that all teams will maintain 16 total draft positions.

Rule #6 - Starting Lineups. Each franchise owner must submit a starting lineup consisting of one quarterback, two running backs, two wide receivers, one tight end, one kicker and one defense/special teams. The starting lineups must be set before the start of the player's game. This is managed by the league software.

Rule #6A. Starting lineups must be submitted online using the Yahoo! league software.

Rule #6B. In order to start a recently aquired player (a player obtained in a trade or as a free agent, see rules #8 and #9), the player must be on the roster by the trading deadline. The trade or free agent aquisition must be accepted by the Yahoo! league software unless overidden by the Commissioner.

Rule #6C. If no lineup is submitted for the week, the MAFFL franchise team will default to the starting lineup from the previous week (the default starting lineup players must still be on the MAFFL franchise roster). The MAFFL franchise owner will be fined a sum of $5.00 for failing to submit a weekly lineup (see rule #13).

Rule #7 - MAFFL Game Scoring. The Commissioner will verify that the league software is capable of handling the scoring rules. In the event that the software is unable to mechanically derive a scoring rule, the scoring rule will be reevaluated. The intent is to not manually derive any scoring.

Rule #8 - Trades between MAFFL Franchises. If two or more franchise owners wish to trade players, they may do so. A trade becomes official when all parties involved have contacted the Commissioner and verified the terms of the deal. Trades may be made at any time, but in order for a franchise to start a recently aquired player, the player must be on the franchise roster by the trading deadline. Trade requests must be made using the league software. The league software determines the trade deadline as midnight of the night before the first game of the week.

Rule #8A. Players may only be traded evenly on a position basis. A quarterback may only be traded for another quarterback, a kicker may only be traded for another kicker, etc. A trade may consist of only one player being traded per franchise, or multiple players per franchise. In either case, the transaction is considered to be one (1) trade. Each franchise involved in the trade will be charged (see rule #8B) for one (1) trade. If more than 2 franchises are involved, the Trade Analyst will determine the number of trades to be charged to each franchise.

Rule #8B. Each franchise will be allotted two (2) free trades/free agent aquisitions for the regular season. For each trade thereafter, the franchise will be charged $2.00, with the fee going to the mid-season/year-end MAFFL party (see rule #13). Playoff teams will be allotted one (1) additional free trade/free agent aquisition during the playoffs.

Rule #9 - Free Agent Aquisitions. If a player isn't on an MAFFL franchise, he is considered to be a free agent available on the waiver wire. Free Agents are available with the league software on a first-come-first-served basis. Each free agent aquisition will count as one (1) trade. See rule #8 for deadlines and how to request a trade.

Rule #9A. For each player obtained via waivers, a player in the same position must be released by the franchise. The released player is available immediately. The league software will identify all recent trades. If the Commissioner determines that dropped players are involved in collusion by the league owners, the Commissioner can nullify free agent acquisitions.

Rule #9B. Each franchise will be allotted two (2) free trades/free agent aquisitions for the regular season. For each trade or free agent aquisition thereafter, the franchise will be charged $2.00, with the fee going to the mid-season/year-end MAFFL party (see rule #13). Playoff teams will be allotted one (1) additional free trade/free agent aquisition during the playoffs.

Rule #9C. The cost for inter-team trades is $2 per player traded per team.

Rule #10. Voiding Trades. Any trade that, in the determination of the Commissioner, is deemed to have the intended purpose of strengthening one team at the expense of the other, can be overturned by the Commissioner. In order to overturn the Commissioner's veto, an appeal may be filed with the League Office (Commissioner), who will informally poll the league owners before rendering what will likely be the same decision. The decision will be final. If the Commissioner determines that added/dropped players are involved in collusion by the league owners, the Commissioner can nullify free agent acquisitions.

Rule #12. Tie Breaker/Power Rankings.

The following is believed to be in alignment with the Yahoo! software. The Yahoo! software supercedes the following if this representation is not an accurate reflection of the software's processing.
  1. Overall Winning Percentage (win-loss record)
  2. Total points scored
  3. head-to-head competition
  4. coin toss

Rule #13. Mid-Season and/or MAFFL Fantasy Bowl Playoff Parties. All trade and free agent aquisition fees will be applied to the beer and pizza fund for league parties. All fines imposed by the Commissioner will also be applied to the league party fund.

Rule #14. MAFFL Regular Season Schedule. The MAFFL regular season will run for the first 13 weeks of the NFL season. Each of the MAFFL teams will play every other MAFFL team at least once (weeks 1 through 11). Weeks 12 through 13 will be a repeat of weeks 1 and 2. The schedule is determined automatically by the Yahoo! software.

Rule #15. MAFFL Playoffs. The MAFFL playoffs will take place in weeks 14, 15 and 16 of the NFL regular season. 8 MAFFL franchises will make the playoffs.  Playoff teams will be seeded 1 through 8, with the lowest seeded team playing the highest seeded team, the second lowest seeded team playing the second highest team, etc.

Rule #15A. Playoff Game Tie-Breakers. For playoff games, franchise owners will submit a tie breaker order of their non-starters (if no line-up is submitted, the backups are ordered alphabetically by last name). In the event the teams tie, the overtime players are compared against each other one at a time until a winner emerges, with all applied points being added to the regulation score. The next tie breaker is total offensive yardage of the 6 starting field players (QB, RBs, WRs, and TE). The next tie breaker is the same category for the 6 backup field players. The last tie breaker will be a non-binding bribe to the Commissioner. The preceding is believed to be in alignment with the Yahoo! software, which will take precedence over these written rules.

Rule #16. Rule Changes. Rules may be revised or added prior to draft night only if voted for by 8 or more team owners. Rules may be revised or added during the season only by a unanimous vote of all of the team owners. One vote per franchise.

Rule Changes

Proposed rule changes must be submitted via an email to all members of the league. All rule changes, if any, will be voted on draft night.

Any gripes to the commissioner from league owners about scoring changes from 1 year to the next will result in the loss of that owner's franchise.
